Good (and cheap) hand grinder

So I want to test out hand grinders for espresso to see if I can live with the 1-2 minutes of grinding per espresso.

The Kingrinder K4 seems like a very good option, especially around £80-90 and even less with their regular sales, but it’s currently out of stock on their Amazon store (and other UK stores are selling it for far too much).

Does anyone have a used K4 or a similarly good (and cheap) grinder laying about for me to test at a good price (cheaper than the full price K4)?

I’m also planning on trying to add a motor to mod it into a motorised grinder (just for fun). I’ve got a few designs in mind.

Sham If you add a motor to a hand grinder it is a good idea to have some way of holding the motor & grinder body in a clamp, rather than hold the grinder body by hand…in short, an electric grinder would probably work out cheaper.

A few people have done similar, making a holder to hold the grinder is the trivial part (I intend it to be a ‘portable’ counter top grinder). The tricky part is specifying a motor with enough torque that is very cheap too, as well as a solid coupling.

Save up and buy a Made by Knock can’t go wrong. My Feld 2 is brilliant I love it.

Jony I did see that grinder, but the K4/K6 seems better value. But I’ll keep a look on ebay if they do pop up for a good price used.

Dusk Yes but there’s no fun in that! I think it’ll be fun to design and make something, and if works well enough I could sell a few to cover material costs 😉

A cordless drill works as well as anything as a cheap way to motorise a hand grinder.

Like you I had little to spend on a hand grinder and I went for the Bella Barista Solo 38. It is both a manual and motorised hand grinder for under £100. Now I do not know how it compares to others but for under a hundred quid it does the job quite well… for me at least.

Pompeyexile It’s a great value and good little grinder. It will grind for espresso, but it’s quite slow to do so…that said, you can press the button and walk away, it will auto stop when done.

Too long time for espresso. I guess it’s alright for filter but for espresso? Probably better to hand grind. They had to pick a weak motor because it runs on a battery I guess.
