MediumRoastSteam The control panel with the buttons has a protective plastic film over it. Took me a while to figure out it’s meant to be taken away, but it’s not a peel off one, so use a sharp scalpel blade to run gently along it’s edges to remove.

SteveBRS - Thanks SteveBRS. I was aware of the plastic cover. Trust me, that one I had before was a real lemon! This one, even with the plastic cover on the buttons, is nothing like the one before. Getting stuck beans in the drum is a right PITA. In that sense, the Gene beats the Behmor hands down.

    Couple of more questions:

    • Any recommendations for good heat proof gloves?
    • Any recommendations to keeping it clean? (They recommend Simply Green, but I don’t think that’s an UK thing - I’m sure you can get it, but if there’s something else more conventional I’m all ears) :-)

I got some from here, it’s very effective at getting the insides clean, but I’m only “properly” cleaning it every 5-6 roasts, I usually just vacuum the dust out and give it a quick wipe.

        I use builders leather gloves.

Re.Behmor cleaning, I found “VORTEX APC Citrus Concentrate All Purpose Cleaner Degreaser” on fleabay.

Light spray, leave 1 minute, wipe off with kitchen paper. Seems to do the trick, also great on bathroom tile grouting.

A short 100gr auto program to burn off after drying and a cooling with the door open

I wonder if someone could help me understand something with the Behmor. It’s not to do with roasting, but with regards to the design of the machine itself.

I was under the impression that the Power Settings (P1…P5) would mean that the heating elements would dim rather than cycle. Finds out I was wrong!

        In P5 (full power) the element is always on;
        In P4, it’s on for 75% of the time, P3 50%, P2 25% and P1… It’s off.

The duty cycle is 15 seconds, so, in P3 (50%), the element is on for 7.5 seconds and off for 7.5 seconds.

Why is that? Wouldn’t it be better to dim the elements instead? Do I need a dimmer mod for the Behmor too?

The Sandbox Smart dims the elements. It does not cycle.

          Ok - thank you @DavecUK.

Does anyone know why the user manual says that, if you want to cool with the door open, you should wait 1m30s into the cool-down cycle and then you can open the door? I read somewhere that it’s to do with preserving the life of the heating elements, to allow them to cool down properly before lots of cold air gets in and “shocks” them. Is this plausible or it’s just someone talking nonsense, and Behmor is just making sure no one gets badly burnt by opening the door too soon?

Also, after more reading, is to ensure there’s no risk of chaff touching the glowing hesting element, igniting and flying out of the roaster. A potential fire risk.

When cooling, I just wait until the elements aren’t glowing before opening the door if I’m in a rush to cool.

Looking forward to MediumRoastSteam & Co Smart Roaster! 😝

Jokes apart, share your roasting experience.

So, below are all my Behmor roasts so far. But, I’d like to draw attention to the last two on the right.

All 4 pretty much followed the same profile, but my first and second roasts I didn’t pay too much attention - but on 3rd and 4th I have, and they were done 1 hour apart from, each other, today.

            Pre-heat for 1m30s;
200g in, P5 manual (full power), 12:00 on the Behmor display.
At 7:00, the afterburner comes in; (5 minutes after roast start)
At 4:30, switch fast drum speed; 7m30s into the roast)
At 3:30, first crack starts, switch to P3 (50%); (8m30s into the roast)
At 2:30, I hit cool down as first crack is nearing the end (9m30s into the roast)
One minute later, I open the door, remove drum and cool externally.

            The output was 173g or 174g. That’s a 13% / 14% development.

And the same was for the 4th roast, with the exception I kept the beans cooling inside, without opening the door at all. The cool down program is set to run for 13 minutes.

See below. I cannot tell any difference between any of the batches. Maybe next time I’ll be super quick and remove the drum as soon as I hit cool down.

3 and 4 were roasted outside today.

            Different room/light:

How did you get it for 250

Decent De1pro v1.45 - Niche Duo - Niche Zero - Decent is the best machine ever made -

LMSC - indeed. Next week I’ll give them a go. I tried 1 and 2 already.

As for 3 and 4, They need to rest a bit.

Cuprajake - bought from HasBean around Xmas time. They were running a good deal.

I think i may have seen it actually now i think back

MediumRoastSteam How were the cups from 1 and 2.? Notes and after taste?

                  What’s difference, which necessitates 3 and 4 requiring a resting period ?

                  Thx
