Im currently on Three pay as you go, and I pay £10 for 10GB data, and unlimited texts and calls. It used to be 4GB but they have upgraded since. I’m not a big data user when out anyway, so it’s pretty pointless these days.
The reason why I’m still with them was mainly because of roaming in and outside of the EU. I used to travel to the US and EU quite often so that made sense. Not so much these days, Maybe I should look elsewhere, so thanks for the recommendations chaps!
Well, I have just ordered the £36 per annum sim. It seems that those who responded seemed positive. I have been perfectly happy with GiffGaff although they do not do wifi calling and sometimes at my house the reception is iffy. So, the SIM will turn up and when it does, I will start the porting process. I have had the same number since 1998 and want to keep it
Me the Mrs and oldest have talkmobile. 30day rolling, 30gb free txt calls etc that is £7.95 pm. Cancel anytime
We did have Plusnet mobile but they got bought out by EE and then contracts prices tripled

dfk41 it’s a good idea to keep the mobile number. Lots of security and identity checks rely on sending a text to the registered number.
MediumRoastSteam Yep, that is what I am going to do. I switched my wife over to them on Xmas day and the procedure is very easy. GiffGaff give you a PAC code immediately and the 1p website is so easy to navigate. I have just hd an email from them saying my own personal sim is in todays post so after the New Year I will port mine across as well….I will report back once everything has completed!
Just an update to this thread. I joined them on Wednesday of last week and yesterday told them to naff off! The basic deal is ok, for me that was £36 pa for unlimited texts and calls. This came with a measly 250 mb per month of mobile data. Despite thinking i had switched mobile data off (I had) after 5 days I only had 85mb left. Then I realised that in order to stay afloat I had to add data at £3 for 10 gigs which lasted 30 days then was lost. I tried to engage with them but after a solid day of trying their phone number and emailing with no reply, I said sod it! Automatically requested a port number. I will try to recover the £36 they have taken but it is not worth pulling my hair out! So, did some research. I was with Giffgaff and always found them a pleasure to deal with. My only complaint was they did not support wifi calling and the room in which I sit the phone signal tends to drop in and out. Also 1p piggybacked EE and too late I found that they had had an outage in my post code for 3 years and not resolved it! So, GiffGaff ruled out I checked out SKy Mobile. I even rang them as they had half price data plans so it said. I said I do not want a half price plan. The one I was looking at was only a smallish amount of data but nope, all their plans double in price after 6 months making them very expensive.
Chatting to our host, he suggested a firm called Smarty piggybacking Three. So, I applied to them using a referral code Dave shared. The system took me right to the end before pointing out my email addy had already been in use with them and refusing to let me go down the referral route. So, I gave them another email address, subscribed and thought I would sort out the details later. SO, Smarty have no contact other than a Live Chat (Bot) or email. I exchanged 17 emails in the next 45 minutes with an idiot who judging by his grammar had failed CSE English. I asked if I could change the registered email addy once the sim was live…….no was the one word answer (I have the correct answer as a screenshot). I then asked how to get around the referral issue . Several emails were exchanged after which I said rowlocks……I am not prepared to use a company when if I wanted a conversation at such a level, a zoo visit would be in order. So, I told him to terminate my application (I had already given a pac code to them) and received back an email containing a link to terminate……nothing else!
So, there we are…….if you are happy with the colour of your grass, stick with it!

Cuprajake You live and learn, then a bit more!
DavecUK - for I needed roaming outside of the EU, eg: US. But not anymore. £5 looks like a great deal indeed.
dfk41 - which one is that Dfk? - edit: Lebara.
I took.a Sim only deal with 02 wben my contract finished with them. £8 a month 40gb data which rolls over. Unlimited calls and texts and EU roaming included. Hope to squieze another 2 years out of this phone

That’s a very good deal
DavecUK The trick with O2 if you are already a customer is to request a PAC code by SMS and simply sit back and wait for the inevitable retention call. I did this a month back - took a few days for me to get a call and they offered me a similar deal to Dutchy’s, albeit only 20GB of data but for £6 a month.
Another nice thing is that EE throw in the added benefits that they offer new contract customers which may or not be of value to you - things like 6 month trials of Apple subscription services. I was wanting to watch the John Lennon documentary on Apple TV so that was handy!
I’d struggle to remember the exact details of the PAYG Vodafone thing I’m on, but it’s one of the type designed for very rare usage. If I don’t use calls, texts or mobile data in a given day, I pay £0.00 that day. As most of my use, which isn’t much anyway, is on wifi, that’s my typical daily, and monthly, cost - £0.
If I do anything to incur charges in a given 24 hour period, it costs me £1 for that day, but then I get all calls and texts, and some (small) amount of data.
The only other issue is I have to do something either twice or three times a year to avoid losing the number. so generally, it costs me £2-3/year, in total.
My other phone (yes, I do have another one) doesn’t have a SIM in it at all, costs me nothing, ever, and lives in a Faraday bag except when I want to use it, or charge it. How do I use it with no SIM? I works just fine on various TOTP authenticator apps, inluding Google and Yubikey. :D
I am on talkmobile, owned by and on Vodafone, roaming included, unlimited everything, I am on a monthly rolling and pay £16 pm. I like to stream music in the car etc so works well for me.
