LMSC Why does the boiler switches itself on burning gas and electricity?
Without knowing how your CH/HW system is configured, difficult to do anything more than guess, but this suggests that a (three-way?) valve (or more than one) may be faulty or leaky… of course now you’ll tell me that there are no valves in your setup. 😁
CoyoteOldMan of course now you’ll tell me that there are no valves in your setup.
How did you get to this ? 🤣
Jokes apart, I have no clue, tbh! 😃
I will call a gas engineer tomorrow for a service, which is due ahead of winter anyway.
Jeez, things are breaking one by one! Can’t afford a replacement under current circumstances! 😊
- 1 year ago, I had to replace the 6 years old dish washer with a an expensive Miele!
- My JL American Fridge Freezer, which is 7.5 years old, is playing hide and seek by freezing foods and liquids in the fridge even at 5C - 6C. I managed to clean the dirt by opening the back of the machine a few days ago. It seems fine for now! Touch wood…
- Now, the boiler! 😳
LMSC - they do say things come in threes! 🤣
LMSC or the room stat is faulty and firing up the boiler. Your engineer will sort it out. If it’s a simple room stat won’t be very expensive.
I keep meaning to change my Drayton controller for a smarter version and pop in a new stat. Just haven’t got round to it. Will do it next spring now…just in case 😁

DavecUK It’s been on an extended life since 2014. We were told the boiler was almost new after a lightning strike in 2014 took out a few. Since then, we replaced the expansion valve in 2019, Hive Smart Stat (new version) in 2018 after a neural fault on our development and Drayton Zone Valve actuator last year. Let’s see what the issue is this year! 😃
Can recommend Tado, but Christ it’s got expensive since I got mine. There was a blonding deal I got on mine in January 21. I paid £379 for the pack with 8 thermostats - now £600!

My friend Murphy told me
LMSC I just want a controller for the boiler that I can connect my phone to as well as a simple room stat that I can also connect to. Not a behive or a wasps nest or anything like that.
LMSC
I had to replace a Y plan zone valve on my hot water this week as it was constantly demanding hot water from the boiler, but the boiler wasn’t asking for hot water.. Essentially the relay in the valve had died so the switch out (orange cable) had failed closed so was outputting 230v to the water request part of the circuit.
This made the boiler run 24/7 but with no water flow going out it was not using much gas.
CoyoteOldMan I am with Coyote on this, presuming there is a 2 / 3 way motorised valve. They can be prone to sticking/ seizing in one position ,it could be as simple as changing the head or possibly the valve.

Called out an engineer, who is expected to drop in, hopefully, some time next week! Jeez, All of them are booked 6-8 weeks ahead!
LMSC Imagine trying to get a heat pump one out. For a gas boiler the most you pay for spares/fix is closely related to the cost of a new boiler. I expect heat pump repair costs will have a similar relationship.

Cuprajake I had called about 10-12 of the local guys in a radius of 5-6 miles, and found just one agreeing to pencil us in for next week. I haven’t told this person it is Hive, as a couple of the other guys advised they won’t touch it as it is messy to deal with! 😳 🤞
Normally, these guys are busy at this time of the year. One of them was saying it is busier than normal this time. I am thinking if the energy crises have contributed to this.
DavecUK Imagine trying to get a heat pump one out.
Perhaps, one may have to wait for a a few months including a freezing winter time at home! 😳

Worse with replacement heat pump costing 6K and another 1K to install it..2.5K+ repair bills will be something that will become more common.
All for a device that has a probable build cost of less than £800 and a retail price that will only increase once they are mandated. You know there’s something wrong when a member of the HOL stated the only way to get people to buy heatpumps is to ban gas boilers. So “they” know people don’t want them despite a massive push in disinformation trying to persuade people.
