Firstly, sorry for your loss, that’s really sad.
It’s become almost impossible to buy Rolex new from Authorised Dealers. There’s a ‘waiting list’ of sorts and as a result there isn’t a single reference that’s cheaper used than new. A new Submariner is about £6k. If you want one immediately you’re looking at £10-14k on the grey market.
People obviously cotton on to this and so many watches are purchased with the sole intent of profiting. Meaning anyone wanting to mark a memorable occasion with a certain watch is unable to do so. It’s sad but somewhat unsurprising.
Same with Patek. A Nautilus is about £40k new, I’m not sure of current resale prices but you were looking at £80k for a ‘almost new’ one.
I tried to buy a Rolex Explorer last year, was told I’d have to wait up to two years. I ended up with two Tudors which actually turned out well as they’re fantastic.
Very few of the people in that Casio queue were probably buying for themselves. Rather just buying to turn a profit, stopping those who actually want to buy for themselves from accessing them.
