Cuprajake funny you say that because I remember both of them did video tear downs of the Niche Zero and had completely opposing opinions on it: TWG knew what he was talking about compared to Portakeeper who wrongly thought a bigger, metal motor automatically equals better 😆
Niche duo - 83mm flat
I am really enjoying his videos at the moment. They’re useful, exploring things I don’t have the time or money to get into but can use to inform decisions potentially.
Given I was going to clean my zero this weekend anyway I might try the PTFE, so what it’s like.
This is a great video - the grinder looks huge side by side to the Zero, lol. Still not sure I’d ever get over how it looks - especially when it’s bigger than the Zero.
dutchy101 You only notice it once! After that it is just there
As much as I do love my Solo / DF64, I have to admit that the mess from the bellows is starting to grate. It never really did before, but it has been 3 years now.
Hmmmmm
- Edited
dutchy101 - I think that’s the strong point of the Niche: no static, no bellows, no fuzz. It just works. And if you now want a flat burr… the Duo is an option. Expensive when compared to the Zero, but might be worthwhile considering.
Saying that… I do wonder whether the new DF64v is as messy as the df64.
Yeah - decisions, decisions. I’m still very much enjoying my Solo, but at some point, I think I will want a change. I’m over 3 years in with the Solo now, which is my 2nd grinder after a Sage Smart Grinder Pro that I had paired with my first ever machine (Sage Bambino Plus).
I think I need to try the Niche Zero or another conical grinder at some point to see whether the profile from a conical would be better for my tastes. I am not sure it would be, but only ever using a Sage SGP at home is not really the best test case..
I think if you are used to a flat then the conical can sometimes come across as muddled
But depends on what you drink
Decent De1pro v1.45 - Niche Duo - Niche Zero - Decent is the best machine ever made -
A good used Zero from a forum member will be around £300 to £350 now…..
dutchy101 - where are you based?
MediumRoastSteam North-West London, mate
Yeah, just notice the fine coffee particles up the side and underneath my machine . It’s a great grinder but a little messy
Little update on burrs. I have the SSP Brew Burrs (Red) as they are called and they do fit fine in the Niche. Grinding is a little slower with these filter burrs. Not by much though….perhaps 10% slower.
The SSP burrs come marked top and bottom, key takeaways are:
- Both SSP burrs are thicker than the thickest Mazzers by 14 and 27 Micron, so they fit the carriers and won’t need shimming to raise their height.
- the SSP Filter burrs have top and bottom thicknesses of 9.606 and 9.619 mm respectively, so 13 micron difference. Have no idea why
- The Diameter of the SSPs is slightly less than the Mazzers at 82.65mm, which means they are slightly more difficult than the Mazzers to centralise in the carrier. The Mazzers are almost and exact fit.
Taste wise it’s a bit early to tell, my first brew has a little bitterness, simply because I forgot to allow for the total difference of around 41 micron in height (both burrs combined), hence my grind for brew was finer and the drawdown time longer. This would account for the bitterness. Grind quality (visually) looked very good from the SSPs.
I’ll keep you informed.
It’s interesting to know the difference in sizes between what are in theory the same size burrs
tompoland super interesting tx for the update. Was the swapping of the burrs straightforward? Is alignment taken care of with the carriers?
In terms of radial alignment it’s a little tricky as they are looser in the carriers, as for other alignment (axial), I have not thoroughly checked yet. It should be fine as the SSP burrs are accurate all around the periphery, as are the Mazzer burrs.
DavecUK Given design of the carrier, looks like someone (cleverer and more skilled than me!) Could design and 3D print a centering cone a bit like you have for the base on a router.
Like a spigot ring for a car wheel
