Can I chuck my hat into the ring? Right, first off, this is not an engineering review. I was lucky enough to be asked by Niche back in October, to accept the latest version of the Niche Duo. I had to sign an NDA and that was that. A couple of days later, a package turned up and I thought, I recognise that. On inspecting the packaging, it is quite clearly designed with the Zero experience in mind. The packaging has instructions printed on it for starters. Once you open the outer box, there is a strap/handle to help you lift the inner box meaning that you do not have to tip it upside down to force it out! I received a gleaming white model that arrived with espresso burrs fitted to it. A quick glance through the comprehensive handbook to make sure that there was nothing I needed to be aware of, and coffee here we come! When I dial in a new grinder, I always pull the first shot at whatever it arrives set to and take my reference from there. The third shot was spot on. 16 gms on an espresso setting takes me 16 seconds. I did not suffer from any static, the grounds were nice and fluffy. I believe the burrs originate from Mazzer (both espresso and brewed). Eventually, I thought it was time to try swapping the burrs over. Again, no help from Niche. They selected me as tester for their idiots instructions, and I feel well qualified for that role. I have made a video that I will post and it took me 70 seconds or so to swap over. You raise the lid, unscrew the silver dial, remove the screw to tighten down the top burr set, then remove it. Push down on the bottom burr set and remove. The process is then repeated with the brewed burrs (these are a different colour, blue) in reverse of course. I am deliberately keeping this summary vague! I have no idea as to how they get a big flat to be retention free. Having swapped the burrs over many times, and since access allows with ease, whenever I clean it out the retention is minimal. In terms of radial alignment it’s a little tricky as they are looser in the carriers, as for other alignment (axial), I have not thoroughly checked yet. It should be fine as the SSP burrs are accurate all around the periphery, as are the Mazzer burrs.

JWSG A bit like any flat compared to a conical. I am a Duo tester. I deliberately have not put them together to do side by side comparisons because they are very different. You get used to something quite quickly. With the Duo when drinking non milk based even I can get a wider, cleaner range of flavours. But, I prefer darker roasted beans so when I switch back to the Zero, I detect a different profile immediately. I do not necessarily go down the road with flats are more suited to lighter roasts and conicals darker but the 2 grinders do produce different profiles. That said, with taste buds like mine who really knows!

In terms of taste the duo has more clarity to the shot, so better separation of flavours.

Not to say the zero produces bad shots, and I think if that was all you knew you would be happy with it. The 83mm burrs in the major/duo just bring more to the table. They give more of the beans character

Visually they both pull and hold together well, where are the SSP look like $hit 🤣

dfk41 Hits the nail in the head: Taste profile. After reading so much about flat vs conical vs SSP vs Unimodal vs High Uniformity vs High Speed vs Low Speed vs this vs that, although not really being in a position to compare grinders side by side, I did have he opportunity to try different grinders. And ultimately it boils down to a certain profile. It’s not that one is better than the other, but more like what appeals to your tastebuds for a certain coffee and roast style. As Cuprajake hints, if you don’t know something else exists or don’t have the opportunity to try it, I doubt you’d care, as the coffee will be good nonetheless. It’s when you have the opportunity to have different grinders sitting in the counter next to each other then you can realistic notice the difference in profile. Providing your tastebuds are up for it that is. As I mentioned on another post, with my hypersonic ultra powerful tastebuds (joke!) I couldn’t taste or point anything remarkably memorable and different between what my Niche Zero produces and what I got from Dave’s Duo. But I didn’t have them side by side either. But I bet if I had them side by side, I would be able to.

Hmmm, that is interesting, though it doesn’t make it easier.

I am looking for second grinder to compliment my P100. There are times where I do not wish to have the ultimate clarity but looking for more balanced and rounded cup with good volume. Also, non SSP burrs tend to be easier to manage the shots, visually at least.

JWSG Well, you need a Zero then. Thing about Niche is you can buy and sell without dropping a fortune. Remember, the early adopters on Indiegogo only paid £360 for them, so thats why around £300 is a good price for both parties. If they bought at retail, expect to pay a little more which is fair

I only drink espresso and long black coffee but would be interested in the ability to have alternative espresso burrs to try out and it would be nice to have two sets installed in separate carriers at once to allow easy interchange.

I have SSP burrs and the filter ones fit fine (without the need for shimming underneath)…I am going to go now and measure up the espresso burrs and let you know in this thread how they would fit.

If the fitting is the same as Mazzer 83mm burrs then alternative burrs should fit fine. Of course some “may” not be OK in terms of height above the edges of the carrier, but that can be dealt with using 0.1 or preferably 0.05mm shim washers at 3 points on then periphery.
