JWSG A bit like any flat compared to a conical. I am a Duo tester. I deliberately have not put them together to do side by side comparisons because they are very different. You get used to something quite quickly. With the Duo when drinking non milk based even I can get a wider, cleaner range of flavours. But, I prefer darker roasted beans so when I switch back to the Zero, I detect a different profile immediately. I do not necessarily go down the road with flats are more suited to lighter roasts and conicals darker but the 2 grinders do produce different profiles. That said, with taste buds like mine who really knows!

dfk41 Hits the nail in the head: Taste profile. After reading so much about flat vs conical vs SSP vs Unimodal vs High Uniformity vs High Speed vs Low Speed vs this vs that, although not really being in a position to compare grinders side by side, I did have he opportunity to try different grinders. And ultimately it boils down to a certain profile. It’s not that one is better than the other, but more like what appeals to your tastebuds for a certain coffee and roast style. As Cuprajake hints, if you don’t know something else exists or don’t have the opportunity to try it, I doubt you’d care, as the coffee will be good nonetheless. It’s when you have the opportunity to have different grinders sitting in the counter next to each other then you can realistic notice the difference in profile. Providing your tastebuds are up for it that is. As I mentioned on another post, with my hypersonic ultra powerful tastebuds (joke!) I couldn’t taste or point anything remarkably memorable and different between what my Niche Zero produces and what I got from Dave’s Duo. But I didn’t have them side by side either. But I bet if I had them side by side, I would be able to.

Hmmm, that is interesting, though it doesn’t make it easier.

I am looking for second grinder to compliment my P100. There are times where I do not wish to have the ultimate clarity but looking for more balanced and rounded cup with good volume. Also, non SSP burrs tend to be easier to manage the shots, visually at least.

JWSG what’s in your p100? Burr wise

If you want different then going smaller flat or conical will change that.

Thats for sure, looking for something different, but maybe not to the extreme end of bright.

Hi do those who have used the Duo know if an alternative set of espresso burrs could be installed in the filter burr carrier or is the carrier different in anyway?

I only drink espresso and long black coffee but would be interested in the ability to have alternative espresso burrs to try out and it would be nice to have two sets installed in separate carriers at once to allow easy interchange.

I have SSP burrs and the filter ones fit fine (without the need for shimming underneath)…I am going to go now and measure up the espresso burrs and let you know in this thread how they would fit.

            https://coffeetime.freeflarum.com/d/1605-niche-duo-83mm-flat/291

If the fitting is the same as Mazzer 83mm burrs then alternative burrs should fit fine. Of course some “may” not be OK in terms of height above the edges of the carrier, but that can be dealt with using 0.1 or preferably 0.05mm shim washers at 3 points on then periphery.

Perfect - thats what I hope to do. Did they work well?

Will be interested in Dave’s reports about how they work out also

only tried them once because i wasnt ment to haha

ill let dave give figures as he can measure stuff

Thor I measured the espresso burrs for thickness at the mounting rim at 3 points.

The dimensions are as follows in mm.

                • 9.625
                • 9.624
                • 9.620

                Top Burr

                • 9.611
                • 9.612
                • 9.618

This shows that the burrs are not cut completely flat and have a variance of about 7 micron for the top burr and 5 micron for the lower burr. The SSP filter burrs were better with only a 1 Micron variance on the same burr. It might be that the espresso burrs were an outlier and I did repeat the measurements 3 times with the same results.

All Mazzer burrs I have checked only have a maximum 4 Micron variance on the same burrs. In general though the variance is about 1 micron. They are remarkably accurately made.

As the thinnest Mazzer burr I have measured is 9.443mmand the carriers still have the height clearance for thse, clearly SSP burrs should fit as the set I have are almost 0.2 mm thicker than the thinnest Mazzers.

Which means the zero point for espresso will be out

Hi Dave thank you for such a detailed and quick response.

I have already purchased a Duo & my interest is more about the potential versatility of it, so this does sound (potentially) very positive!

Reading about the Duo online I do wonder if more would be interested on the basis if it turns out to be good for changing between different espresso burrs. Having two easily interchangeable espresso sets would be a big positive for me (rather than 1 filter and 1 espresso).

as far as im aware the only difference in the two burr carriers is the colour.

It certainly will, but whenever you put new burrs on the carrier, you would have to find the Zero point and the best position of the 3 possible positions of the top burr carrier (nicknamed the “sweet spot”)

Cuprajake as far as im aware the only difference in the two burr carriers is the colour.

Yes, the actual metal carriers are identical.

I suspect many people will use the carriers in exactly that way e.g. HU SSPs for certain coffees and Mazzer Espresso for others. This is because the HU SSPs are not always better, or to put it another way, often worse.

Sadly the influencers and some forceful forum users on HB seem more interested in negging on pricing issues (or simply not reading the manual, rather than looking at the positive points. Or the fact that it doesn’t stall (or as some euphemistically put it for another competing grinder, “it’s not a stall it’s a safety cutout”). You won’t see many grinders able to do this…almost none. It’s from a standing start too, not running while dropping beans in.
