At 18 quid a kilo I thought why not. So expecting it tomorrow…So, a Merry Christmas to me!
Coffee Compass Mystery 15
Pompeyexile I walloped through mine matey. It definitely gets better with age!
I’m really enjoying the bag you sent me David, it’s an absolute blinder. I’m thinking of placing an order for another bag we’re enjoying it so much. It’s on the darker side of what I would typically drink, but very smooth and surprisingly sweet. It punches well through milk, but tastes good enough that my wife and I are mainly drinking it simply as espresso.

JammyDodger Richard is a very skilled roaster! I am so glad that you are enjoying them matey

Have you tried the 16 yet?
Inspector Nope! Thanks for the nudge as I had forgotten about it!
I’d love to give the Mystery 16 a go with the 2kg green bean bag.
£24.50 is a good price, but I have no idea how to roast it. Even if it had a country origin, I’d have something to work from. Shame.

If that’s the only thing stopping you, I’d contact them and ask. I did that in the past and Richard was nice and helpful.
You could also buy some green and some roasted to have a reference point (nice option if you want to compare your roast to the pro).
Finally, I’m not sure it is absolutely necessary to have someone tell you how to roast, as it’s all about taste which is subjective anyway.
When you compare the price, remember that you will lose some weight (around 20% maybe?) so the price difference between greens and roasted isn’t as big as it may seem.
If you go for it, I would love to hear your impression.
Doram I’ll send them a message.
When roasting, because I have the information like the altitude and country, I can work off my starting profiles for characteristics like LD or HD, natural or washed, etc.
In this case, I’d have no reference point at all and would go through more than necessary to work out a starting profile.
I guess I’m being pedantic here, but also trying to have as little waste as possible.
If I can get some information and I buy, I’ll report back.
Just ordered the mystery 16 as well as an espresso selection pack (3×500g), selected Brighton Lanes, Cherry Cherry and Sweet Bourbon.
Look forward to trying all of these as both an espresso and as filter
Thanks for the update! Can’t blame you. To be honest, Coffee Compass used to be my regular supplier until they upped the price of greens, making them too close to the price of roasted IMO.
So I moved to Penine, and happy with them. I also have some coffee from the Collective which I still enjoy, but I have not seen much activity there recently. If you happen to see anything going on there, I would appreciate a shout (it’s my wife’s account so I don’t check very often).

Don’t understand tho how giving information about altitude and process would harm in any way?
I pointed out the 16 to a friend who got some thinking I was recommending them. He’s now not happy with me as they are very dark roast and too bitter for his taste. His guess is maybe Ethiopia, v small beans apparently.

I was going to say Ethiopian (and Kenyan) beans roast darker in appearance due to sucrose released during roasting but then I noticed Coffee Compass do an ‘Extra Dark’ Ethiopian roast.
It must be practically pure black!
