Interesting. I get really great results with convex, been using it about 18 months and it seems to work well.

Decent De1pro v1.45 - Niche Duo - Niche Zero - Decent is the best machine ever made -
Is that the right study? I can’t see anything about tampers, just baskets/screens and grouphead dispersion.

its not about tampers, its about doughnut extractions etc, which is what i was saying about the tamper changing the visual look of the shot, you can do it with a flat tamper by making a crater in the puck with wdt and having higher sides

Ah ok, 99% of that article is way over my head.
I made a quick diagram about how I imagine convex tamping working. I’m not saying the end result is better, I know it’s not from using both, but I 100% find a convex tamper results in consistently better shots with my lazy workflow - counter tap/distribution tool/tamp - no WDT.
Before the physics guys jump in, I’m absolutely not saying there’s science behind this, just reporting my findings.
Obviously both will fill the basket to the edges, I’m just wondering if a convex tamper creates more of a ‘sealed’ surface for the initial moments water is hitting the puck.

I just use a self leveling tamper. I have an EazyTamp. You can get multiple base diameters and thicknesses and base styles for it. Along with numerous handle choices. It is abit of a pricey initial outlay, but then if you change your PTF or basket and need to change the base, you can just order another base. Or if you have two machines that take different size baskets, you can easily swap the bases. Even the spring and the flange size is changeable/swappable.
Uncletits I usually order when we’re over in Australia.
Do you have family in Oz? What’s your flight time?
My daughter, grandson and son-in-law are next week moving from Whistler, British Columbia, Canada (a 5 hour flight from Toronto, Ontario, Canada) to Margaret River, Western Australia (near Perth, a 25 hour flight from Toronto). 😕
She met an Aussi lad at the 2010 Winter Olympics and the rest is romantic history. Their lifestyle will change from mountain hiking and skiing to beach camping and surfing.

The exact reason why I ended up in Great Britain. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣.
I have a Torr 58.5 Trap which I use with s 58 mm VST. Although you can nutate with it , I do not (not recommended now I believe).. Fill from grinder , straight tamp fingers judging the level on basket rim.
I do often WDT depending on the coffee.
Elcarajillo Although you can nutate with it , I do not (not recommended now I believe)
Says who exactly! I still do…..screw the fashion police!
