Gorilla Gear burrs in a Niche Zero

tompoland oh sure! I’m not at all trying to prove they are bad by any means. I got so much ridicule for my disliking them I thought i’d toss them in an experiment I was doing. I do think a big part of their appeal is how easy the niche makes it to dial in. Huge margin of error for a decent shot.
And the GG thing is frustrating. Sucks to have an idea taken when in the midst of conversations. I originally tried to get Hansung to create the burrs with me, but he was too busy. John heard about my mission to create a better burr set and reached out to see if i;d want to work with him. we started, had many calls, and he was working on a contract between us. Before finalizing that, he took an idea we discussed in one of the zooms I gave him and launched his gg burrs. Quite frustrating, but cest la vie.

Lance, you misread me perhaps. On your YT channel, on the review in question I asked you a simple question, ‘2 things Lance. In a video review of a new bit of kit, why did you not show the power brick, and secondly, would have been nice to see you grinding some really light beans matey’.
This was your reply, ’Didn’t show the brick? Shit. Guess it got accidentally chopped in the editing. And the beans I ground were light (Nomad beans)'.
I thought your reply was flippant as it suggests that you have no control over the edit, what makes it and what does not and the final review that you post. Your answer made me think that the decision to exclude the power brick was taken on purpose.

tompoland to go off this, I make a very humble about (about 2500) from patreon. BUT I pay my camera man 1700 monthly, I buy at least 2k worth of coffee gear monthly, I paid for all of my camera gear and studio reno. I still work full time at Onyx Coffee Lab. That is my main source of income and the only reason I can make all this work. I have never taken money from a company for anything (other than Xbloom, but I am openly an advisor for their product and heavily consulted on it. I am literally listed on their website as advisor, so idon’t count that). I don’t use affiliate links as many do (eg, fellow links, even though I use the ekg and have likely been the reason loads of people have bought them). If my goal was to profit, I could so easily. I am charismatic and know how to negotiate (salesman here for Onyx). But, it isn’t. I am dipping into my own pockets. I do this because I want to provide helpful informatino.
Of course, in the age of Trump, “fake news” is so wide spread it can easily prey on the minds of the masses to be overly skeptical of everything. I get that. No worries.
Is it frustrating to be constantly questioned as to my motives? sure. Especially since I am turning away loads of avenues of revenue in order to be above reproach. But, I get it. No worries.
Until I can earn the trust of more people, i’ll still be working 50-60 hours weekly at Onyx and sacrificing sleep for my content creation haha.C

i dont think its the niche’ fault you dont like it, its all you @lancehedrick 😛 joking aside, the burrs in there are traditional, thats what people should expect, its just a good grinder which most new people upgrade to as its a very good price for what you get, dont forget it came out when there was nothing really in that price it was a specilita, modded mazzer or £1500 plus for an ek, ceado etc.

dfk41 perhaps you shouldn’t have taken the liberty to make the assumption I was lying. I actually work quite a bit and I often don’t watch the final edit before posting. if i do, i am not very nitpicky. My videographer is a coffee professional (owns an SCA school here in Porto), so I don’t worry about it.
But, you decided to come and attack my character in here without tagging me. A bit sheepish, if you ask me. But it’s all good. I’d prefer you ask me before blowing up.
I did, in fact, film the power brick. it did not, in fact, make the final cut. My videographer sometimes cuts things that should not be cut (like in my tips for better coffee video. I suggest removing chaff and he completely cut how I remove the chaff).

Cuprajake oh yes! I am aware. But the burrs are not just “traditional.” Lots of burrs are traditional. It seems the niche burrs tend to create larger fines. Without going into too much, they extract extremely low at the same recipe as almost every other grinder I have. They give more bitterness than standard cones and I suspect it is from these larger fines. 10micron and below don’t extract. They have already let go of the compounds that are extractable (see Samo Smrke). Things like the core burrs from weber, for example, create a heavy amount of sub 10 micron fines. THey produce some of the most velvety shots i’ve experienced. Niche does not. They jsut make very average shots I can rival with a plentitude of grinders. what the niche has, however, is incredible workflow. I just wanted better burrs haha

Cuprajake oh I was referring to the core burrs in the eg1. I made the comparison because it is a set of flat burrs but gives a better and more true conical profile than the niche. The key uses 83mm mazzer burrs.

Can’t help but think of this :

The burr arguments - time for more than one grinder, In fact a flat needn’t cost much more than these GG burrs. But say some one gets a flat. Next question is weigh in or use the hopper? They need different grind settings. The same would probably happen with a Kony. It does with a Robur.

Niche and adjustment - I’d say ease is the major aspect not latitude. ½ a dot here is significant. The problem with others is the difficulty in making that fine an adjustment.

Then just what can be done to change the taste profile of conical. The usually major change is number of flutes and the entry are for the beans to fall into. Both relate to the diameter used, The cone angle of the centre burr could be changed and that just on it’s own would probably change grinding rate.

How many prototypes have been made to determine the best profile? Can some one come up for physical reasons for them giving a different taste? They can on flat. Some are more aggressive than others. Diameter alters the g force that drives the basic aspects of the way they grind. Popcorning can result in grinds appearing some way from the grinder. Not on conical.

AC motored grinders will grind faster in the USA than in the UK unless the burrs are changed.

So I’m a cynic - with good reason.

Cuprajake I understand. Hard to play nice with a disgrace of a human, though. Since my initial comment, there have been members here who have privately messaged me on IG to recount times dfk was so horrible to them it onset depression. Counts of misogyny, racism, and more. Happy to play nice but not with someone who has had such a horrible fingerprint on the lives of others. Perhaps someone like him simply shouldn’t “play” at all.
Funny this forum touts itself as nice when someone like him is lurking around.
Being “old and grumpy” isn’t an excuse to be belligerent and demeaning.

Cuprajake hard to ignore such actions when someone has literally had to seek therapy because he bullied them relentlessly on the previous forum. That’s not something I can ignore.

I’m going to leave coffeetime as long as he is here and unapologetically the way he is.

Doesn’t hurt my feelings- it pisses me off. So, cheers. Not a fan of people (in this case a forum) defending, even if not directly, an objectively bad person.
